    There is a Santa Claus!

    Yes, it's true.

At 10:00 this morning, the Mayor of Toronto, David Miller, announced he would not be seeking reelection in 2010. There's only one thing I can say:

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I said his obsequious bootlicking at the feet of the garbage union would cost him politically, and I was right. The only thing missing from his announcement was the banjo getaway music and the pickup trucks carrying the angry mob behind him.

Of course, his successor has quite a mess to clean up:

    • The city's budget deficit has ballooned from $1 billion to over $3 billion since he took office 2003
    • The garbage strike alone cost the city over $450 million, a fact he flat-out lied about
    • Property taxes have increased approximately 30% since 2003
    • The TTC is looking at another fare hike in the face of a $17 million budget shortfall - due in part to Miller's refusal to pressure the provincial and federal governments to shoulder their share of the burden
    • The roads are literally falling apart
    • He increased service charges for everything from drivers' licence renewal to public swimming pools
    • The waterfront reconstruction, despite being millions of dollars in debt, is still years behind schedule, and may never actually be finished
    • He increased land transfer taxes, driving new home buyers out of the market
    • Police Chief Bill Blair

The list just doesn't end. I don't know who will succeed him, but I do know one thing: Whomever blackmailed him into walking away for "personal reasons" is owed a debt of gratitude from the citizens of Toronto.

The longer his list of excuses gets, the more inclined I am to believe you're right: Someone's blackmailing him. I mean, look at this guy, for God's sake: He's about the biggest power-hungry, media whore I've seen in a while. You don't just "flip the switch" and curtail that type personality overnight. Unless you're getting "assistance", of course. :)
